Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a procedure used to permanently reduce hair growth. While waxing, shaving and plucking can remove hair, laser hair removal is a more permanent procedure.

Laser hair removal can reduce and sometimes permanently remove hair growth on any area of the body except near the eye. The most common areas where laser hair removal is requested include the legs, bikini area, underarms, face, neck, upper lip, chest, nipples, back and abdomen.

One hair laser removal session can produce long-term hair removal, but multiple hair laser removal treatments might be necessary because hair grows in cycles, known as anagen or growth stages, at any given time. Additional laser hair removal sessions can eliminate all hairs in a growth stage, so a series of laser hair removal treatments every four to six weeks is common.

Laser hair removal is not for everyone. The Food and Drug Administration has approved several lasers for laser hair removal, but results cannot be precisely predicted and vary by individual. People with light skin and dark hair have the best chance for the most effective laser hair removal. The closer skin tone matches hair color, the less likely laser hair removal treatment will be effective. Laser hair removal treatment works best for those whose hair is darker than their surrounding skin.

Those with very dark skin will absorb too much laser energy in their skin and are not candidates for normal laser hair removal treatments. They require highly specialized lasers. Very tan patients with light hair cannot utilize typical laser hair removal treatments, but may have success with specialized lasers.

Advantages of laser hair removal include:
· The possibility of permanent or long-lasting hair removal.
· If performed properly, laser hair removal is considered safe.
· It covers large areas like the back and legs.
· If re-growth occurs, hair is lighter in color and finer in texture.
Disadvantages include:
· Long-term data on its safety and effectiveness have not been accurately established.
· Response and re-growth rates have not been established and cannot be predicted.
· Generally not as effective on gray, red or blonde hair.
· People with dark or tan skin must use laser hair removal very cautiously.
· Improper treatment can cause burns, lesions, and skin discoloration.
· The long-term effects on other skin structures are unknown.
· Laser hair removal can be expensive and it can be painful.
